What are twist and twine in packaging of food?


Where did thread and twine came to people's lives from? Let’s make a small trip into history.

Threads in their usual form appeared in the Middle Ages with the invention of a tape machine, which made it possible for people to make a more delicate yarn. Before our ancestors learned to weave, they mastered the technique of needlecraft and twisting.

Our ancestors perceived the fate of a person as a twisted thread, which has its beginning and end. It was believed that with the help of symbolic weaving and magic knitting, one could even determine the future and correct it.

Another important point in the history of twist and twine is their differentiation. For a long period of time yarn and threads were quite universal. So how does modern twine look nowadays?


Modern cotton twine and thread in the food industry is the twisted textile yarn, which is from 1 to 6 mm in diameter. The last 15 years in the production of cotton twines the 100% natural cotton threads, artificial polypropylene threads for reinforcement of twine, and also a mixture of cotton with polyester or acrylic are most often used. It is a modern high-quality yarn that brings twine more brightness. As a result, it has an excellent aesthetic look and is 70% natural.




The name of the twine most often defines its composition (cotton twine is made of 100% natural cotton yarn, linen or jute twine for cooking – of linen or jute fibers, viscose or polyester thread – of viscose and polyester yarn).

Depending on its thickness, the modern twine has the unit of measurement of its density – tex: the thinner is the twine, the lower is the tex. It shows how much a thread or twine, which is 1 km (1 kilometer) in length, weights. Tex can be converted into meters and vice versa. The thickest 1500 and 2000 tex twines are most often used:

  • for tying meat, sausages and other food products of a high weight (from 7 kg per one piece). These are meat balyks, smoked or dried full pieces of pork and beef, boiled sausages in the natural covering, large pieces of ham and saltisons;
  • for tying cheeses in different cover and sizes for their smoking, drying and aging;
  • for tying the sacks with cereals, various boxes up to 10 kg, as well as for decorative tying of boxes with cakes and sweets.


The twines of average 810 and 1200 tex thickness are most often used:

  • for tying the full range of smoked, boiled and smoked, roasted and baked sausages, meat delicacies (carbonate, smoked ribs, bacon, ham and meat rolls), and boiled sausages in artificial covering;
  • for tying smoked sausage cheeses;
  • for smoking of fish and chicken;
  • for decorative tying of boxes with cakes and sweets, as well as for tying and packing of bakery industry (bagels and decorative biscuits).


The thinnest 410 and 610 tex twines and threads are most often used for tying sausages: boiled, grilled, smoked and dried.
